Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovich walked out on the Old Trafford pitch tonight debuting the Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly. In what was a battle of two of Europe’s biggest teams for a place in the Champions League quarter final, and another duel between Sir Alex Ferguson and the self proclaimed “Chosen One”, Jose Mourinho, the Superfly took center stage for just one moment!
After only five minutes United’s intent was clear, and it was quiet evident on the right wing. Inter’s inexperienced left-back, David Santon, faced the ever tricky Cristiano Ronaldo, European player of the year, not an easy task! The Portuguese star capped off an excellent win for the reigning European champions scoring a header with 15 minutes left to play. Soon after, Ronaldo smashed a trademark free kick from 25 yards that Julio Cesar could only palm away, showing the power of his shot. Zlatan Ibrahimovic also had a good game, although he will be upset over the first half header he missed. From 5 yards out, Ibrahimovic managed to knock the ball down off the ground, and back up over the bar. Throughout the game he was a menace to the United defense. I think this battle was won by Ronaldo, scoring for the third time in a row while debuting a new cleat!
The Superfly is seen as the next generation in soccer cleats because of its unique design. Nike has used a FlyWire system that wraps across the top of the cleat creating a stabilization effect. The FlyWire joins at the top and has the same properties as a suspension bridge. This has allowed Nike to use a lighter material in the upper, creating one of the lightest soccer cleats ever made at 6.8oz.
Nike is expecting to sell out of these cleats, just as they did with the limited edition Vapor Berry. If you are interested in making sure you get your hands on a pair of the Superfly, you can order at Soccer.com.
