Under Armour have been making a splash in the boot world over the last 2 years. The company has been aggressive in challenging the major manufacturers by signing up some dynamic young players to sport their boots; I’m thinking specifically of Holland’s Memphis Depay, Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka and Canada’s Janine Beckie of the women’s game.
As well as signing up dynamic young players the company has been taking a bold strategy to their boot releases, such as the UA Speedform CRM, a boot that is considers to be Under Armour’s best performing boot. The Speedform is also a boot which I have been itching to try out because they are one of the most interesting looking on the market currently.
Under Armour were kind enough to send a pair of their newest non-limited release colourway of Risk Red/White up to the frozen tundra’s of Canada about a month ago. With Canadian winter’s being what they are the weather has finally begun to clear up enough to take some pictures highlighting what is in my opinion the best looking version of the Speedform released so far (and no I’m not wearing my Canadian coloured glasses).
Technically speaking the Speedform is an anomaly in the speed boot genre. It’s not a boot that’s built around shedding as much weight as possible. It’s built around offering balance and comfort at as low a weight as feasible, without affecting performance. The comfort factor is highlighted by the complete absence of a traditional insole, it has instead been replaced with a 4D foam footbed, which by feel wouldn’t be out of place in a pair of slippers.
The upper is comprised of a 1 piece synthetic material which houses an articulated toe box in the front. The articulated toe box is designed to mold to the individual players forefoot and mimic a more barefoot feel, and when combined with the foam footbed makes the Speedform one of the more revolutionary designs on the market.
As we move closer to spring and the outdoor season, I’m positively giddy to see what the Speedform has to offer, and excited to put on a boot with a patriotic colourway. Well done Under Armour.
