So, if you have not noticed: Nike have recalled the Vapor Superfly cleats before they have even been released. Soccer.com and Worldsoccershop.com have both pulled the cleats from their websites. Soccer.com have this message on their website:
“Unfortunately, despite more than 1300 hours of wear-testing and extensive athlete feedback in the development of the Mercurial Vapor Superfly, Nike recently identified a potential product integrity issue with the boots.
Due to the potential issue above and because Nike is committed to providing consumers with innovative performance technology and the highest quality products this boot will not be available on April 1st as originally advertised. Currently we do not have a revised delivery date from Nike for this model.”
I actually saw this yesterday but thought it was an April fools joke! Yesterday, I had an opportunity to speak to a representative who said that the cleats will be released in the near future, but a date has not been set. The Nike Mercurial Vapor V has not been affected by the problem. I am pretty interested in finding out the real problem with the cleats. I will also be interested to see what this does in terms of sales of the Superfly cleat, which is already at a hefty $300 per pair! To be honest, the whole recall is very surprising as usually Nike have their releases down to a tee, especially since they have top players testing the cleats out all the time. Does this mean that Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovich were playing in cleats that could have had a problem associated? Watch this space for more updates!
