adidas has released a next generational upgrade for one of the most iconic boots of all time with the Copa Icon or the Copa Mundial.1 – what is a modern revamp of the original Copa Mundial. Yes, we are starting the process of moving on from the most iconic soccer cleat of all time, with this new version being retooled for the demands of today’s game.
Let’s be honest, the soleplate on the Copa Mundial has been well overdue an upgrade, something we have pointed out on numerous occasions. There is no doubt that they provided one of the most stable levels of performance we have seen in a cleat, but they are cumbersome and just don’t meet the demands of the modern player. The one thing that is likely to really upset fans is the removal of the fabled fold over tongue, we hear you with the disappointment on that modification.
The Copa Icon is crafted to provide optimal synergy between ball and boot. They are created using a soft and adaptive cow leather upper, with a similar stitch configuration across the forefoot. That premium feel extends all the way up to the collar thanks to its comfortable synthetic suede lining and tongue. And underfoot, the soleplate is dramatically upgraded, offering a visual appearance that looks a lot like the soleplate that sat on the Nemeziz series.
Overall, there is a lot to be excited about with this release. But, if you are a true Copa Mundial aficionado, I’d look to pick up some pairs now!
