Now, this is very BIG news! It has been confirmed that Puma and La Liga have signed a new three-year partnership deal that will see Puma become the official soccer ball supplier for the Spanish league. The deal starts next season and will see Puma elevated and showcased at an entirely new level!
If you want to know how significant this is, note that this new deals puts an end to a 23-year old ball rights that Nike has held. We are talking every league goal Messi and Ronaldo have scored in the league! When we tune into Barcelona or Real Madrid games going forward, the images will show Messi and company scoring with the best ballt Puma has on offer!
This new Puma deal will last until the end of the 2012/22 season, and word on the street is Puma paying €5 million (US$5.6 million) per season. What is wild about this is the reason La Liga executives decided to change direction from Nike. Apparently, the decision comes from the growing frustration that Nike has provided the league with the same ball used in the English Premier League and Italy’s Serie A.
Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, had wanted a ball that would be globally recognizable and “completely exclusive” compared to Europe’s other top leagues, according to AS.
As reference, Puma’s top soccer ball available right now is the PUMA FINAL 1 Statement. It is likely we will see something different created and used next season, so it is now a case of watch this space!
