Nike’s Montebelluna facility was established back in 1996, becoming the birth place of a new era for Nike soccer. Its first football boot, the Air GX, debuted the following year and since that time the skilled boot artisans of Montebelluna have continued to create game-changing boots. Combining premium materials with the finest innovation, the facility famously provides Nike’s pro players with boots engineered to their exact specifications.
Now on the 20th anniversary of the original Air GX release and in celebration of the Montebelluna team that created it, Nike is launching a limited-edition boot called the Hypervenom GX. Featuring a supple Alegria leather as well as Nike Flyknit, it is the merging of traditional materials with modern technology in a boot that is 35% lighter than the original Air GX.

Visually, several key cues are also kept intact. The Hypervenom GX retains the iconic lines of the Air GX, though without the quilting that originally perforated the leather. The upper also stays true to the asymmetrical lacing of the 1997 model, but without the oversized tongue rendered unnecessary thanks to advancements in lacing.
Completing the look and celebratory nature of the release, numerous details are included to honor the Monetebelluna team, several members of which have been with Nike since the launch of the first Air GX. The Montebelluna crest accompanied by the colors of the Italian flag appear on the shoe bag, sockliner, and heel. Italy’s flag also appears as a woven label on the lateral side of the boot. The Alegria leather symbol on the upper includes the number 20 to mark the anniversary.
There is a final twist with this one that might please some of you. The initial blue Hypervenom GX colorway is set to be released Monday, October 16th in the US. BUT, we are also hearing that you will be able to customize additional GX-inspired designs on NIKEiD sometime soon. So, even though this is a limited edition release and is sure to sell out fast, there will be some opportunities to create your own version.
