So, it is true; Umbro is the latest brand to jump in on the high-collar movement with a limited release boot they’ve named “Calibra”. Featuring a high-cut collar, the ankle lining and inner sock is a neoprene material, designed to hug your foot in place underneath a leather upper with synthetic grip regions. You can see the grip pattern across the upper of the boot, offering some added touch and control elements.
As you can probably tell this is a pretty wild release that tickles the imagination and will eventually give players another option. It actually joins Ryal’s drop from last week. Without testing either boot, I can tell you that both face an uphill battle if they want to take their heritage style boots into the competitive category of modern dynamic fitting boots. Getting the color right is paramount to having any hope, but the aesthetics are also vitally important.
As it stands, the Calibra has only been released in Brazil, of all places. To start, Umbro has gone with 3 colorways, all featuring signature Double Diamond color combos. If we hear more details about a US release, we will make sure to let you know about it!
For now, what is your take on this release and do Umbro stand a chance of making it in the category?
