This year marks the 37th anniversary of Argentina winning their first World Cup title at home during the 1978 World Cup, with a 3-1 extra time victory over the Netherlands. It was a final where both teams engaged in what can only be described as ‘footballing brinkmanship’, and the world bore witness to a sterling performance from tournament top goal scorer Mario Kempes.
It was however the genius of Argentina manager Cesar Luis Menotti’s tactics which saw La Albiceleste lift the new World Cup trophy for the first time. As well as being a quality manager, Menotti is a bit of a cult figure due to his habit of being rarely without a cigarette during matches. However, there’s another fact about about Menotti which bares disclosing, he was an ardent loyalist of the Puma King boot; and following the 1978 World Cup he was honoured by Puma with the release of the King Menotti Star, a customized pair of Puma King’s featuring a gold upper in recognition of his World Cup championship.
To honour the 37th anniversary of both Argentina’s first World Championship and the release of the original Menotti Star, Puma are bringing them back as a super limited release (only 511 pairs globally). Featuring a supersoft kangaroo leather upper which has been bathed in gold and paired with silver formstripes, the Menotti Star has been paired with the classic traditional soleplate of the King Top Di; and gives you a boot straight out of a time warp which will hold up to the rigors of the modern game.
For me the Menotti Star is definitely the best looking boot I’ve seen released this year. There’s something about the colour and the customized stitching pattern on the forefoot of the boot which makes this boot even more special than it’s limited run implies.
We all know that Puma probably do limited edition boots better than anyone else and they’ve outdone themselves with the Menotti Star. It’s a work of art which will be equally at home on your mantelpiece or on your feet as you turn back the clock to when football was a simpler time and dominated by some absolute characters, like Cesar Luis Menotti.
If you need to get your hands on a pair of the Puma King Menotti Star your best bet will be through soccer.com; but you’re going to want to act quickly, a boot this pretty and this limited won’t be available for long!
