I discovered football marketing by accident in 1994. I was a 10 year old kid who happened to be playing the original incarnation of FIFA (FIFA International Soccer) for that criminally underrated system called SegaCD (I swear I was one of five people globally who owned one). As the FIFA series was literally in it’s infancy, the SegaCD version was just a Sega Genesis port, with a whole slew of loading wait times.
However, there was a small ‘easter egg‘ of sorts, the original viral marketing campaign in football. Adidas had teamed up with EA Sports (and I guess FIFA) to market their newest creation, The Predator. Included on the disk was what I think is the original football boot commercial, as I had never seen a boot ad on the television or anywhere else before this.
So as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the boot which changed the game, here is the original commercial which gave way to the legend.
That was utterly fantastic. I thought I was old because I played FIFA 97 on the Sega Saturn (also criminally underrated). Black Boots everywhere
