Nike Mercurial IX CR7 – Supernova Edition

Nike are back with another signature and personalized release for Cristiano Ronaldo, with this one taking on an appearance to match his “out of this Galaxy” performances. Well, at least that is where the concept of the design was originated, according to Denis Dekovic, Nike Footwear Design Director:

We were watching a game, and after Cristiano scored yet another amazing free-kick the commentator posed the question ‘Is Ronaldo from this planet?!’”

This version of the Nike Vapor IX features an all-over digital print of the Star Vela Supernova and includes a seven star path print, paying homage to Cristiano’s jersey number. The supernova print is juxtaposed with a popping chrome swoosh flecked with silver fleck and a Blue Glow outline. There is definitely not another boot out there that looks like anything like these.

Everything about the release is geared toward CR7 being out of this world, limitless and from another planet. Over the past few weeks, we have been exposed to a lot of leaks of this boot and without the actual thought process behind the design, they look kind of odd. But when you factor in the direction Nike has taken and the reasoning behind the obscure design, it starts to make some sense. Sometimes understanding where the concept comes from can create a more personal collection with a wild and very abstract print.

The actual design is built into the Nike Vapor IX boot, which we have become familiar with since their release this January. The upper is a smooth teijen microfiber as opposed to the dimple design we have seen on most releases in the range. This is pretty standard for a Ronaldo release as it seems to be his personal choice for optimal control and touch.
